Special issue: on the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Banco de Mexico

For centuries, central banking has been the subject of political intrigue and academic debate. As the financial institution at the top of national economic structures, central banks have been a battleground for the various national economic powers in constant conflict, and the correlation of international forces that have set the tone for the great changes in capitalism are reflected in the evolution of central banking throughout the capitalist world.

This special issue, the result of a public call for papers on the occasion of the centenary of the operations of the Bank of Mexico (BoM), brings together articles by frequent authors of Ola Financiera, but also by authors who are publishing in the journal for the first time. The welcome result of the call is a diversity of perspectives on the same institution, with different approaches to the historical evolution of the functions of the BdM; the thinking that has governed the actions of the institution; in addition to its institutional processes and its relations with Mexican society and national and international financial markets.

Approaching the least significant birthday of twenty years of existence, Ola Financiera remains committed to a critical perspective that celebrates diversity of thought and pluralism of theoretical approaches. With the conviction of understanding things in order to improve them, the centenary of the BoM occurs at a time of historical transition in the global order. As the institution that serves to connect national economies with the outside world, and that has evolved hand in hand with international trends, the actions of the central bank have set the tone for economic life, but the institution remains a little-known object of study. The responses to our call for papers are undoubtedly an important contribution in the effort to better understand not only the BoM, but also the context in which its institutional evolution is situated.
